Podiatry and chiropody questions

FAQ

Q: What are the differences between a podiatrist, chiropodist and foot health practitioners?

The main difference is that a podiatrist is highly skilled and qualified at degree level (meaning they have completed 3-4 years full time at university). They have a broader scope of practice and can diagnose and treat complex foot and ankle conditions, including performing surgery.

A chiropodist was the old diploma qualification which has now become the podiatry degree, while a foot health practitioner (FHP) provides routine and general foot care for minor issues. FHPs complete a short course, which is not regulated or standardised. They are not insured to diagnose medical conditions or allowed to treat the high risk diabetic foot.

Podiatrists are regulated and audited by the HCPC which ensures professional standards are met and that they regularly take part in continuous professional development.
